I was out mowing the back yard this afternoon, wondering what was for dinner, when I noticed in the distinctive, brain-like striations of a morel mushroom pop out of the back of the mower. Holy crap! I've been hoping to come across these suckers for years, and lo and behold, I look around and there's a little batch of them all around me, right in our back yard. Ironically, they're just a few feet away from our spiffy new and improved garden plot, waiting to be sowed with all manner of vegetation. Except these little gems took absolutely no work on my part -- I almost felt guilty as I plucked them out of the ground, already plotting their fate. In three minutes I had picked enough of the tasty little buggers to fry up into a delicious, if not altogether healthy dinner. And by God, they were tasty!
